JMU & UVA Game Times Set
The ACC has released its early season football schedule which includes game times for UNC’s first two home games. On Labor Day weekend, the Butch Davis-led Tar Heels will host JMU on September 1 at 6:00pm. Two weeks later UNC will host UVA in a Noon-time showdown.
Be sure to stop by the house before each of those games and see the quality guys in the house these days!
Spring Semester Ends
Brothers,
As the semester wound down, GP Scott Dennis was nice enough to email me an update on the chapter’s strong year:
“We sponsored a concert at the Cat’s Cradle at which the house band played among a number of acts that raised $1500 for the Amani Children’s Foundation, and also had a Pig Cookout that raised $1500 for the Make a Wish Foundation. We hope to make the cookout a spring tradition. This semester we also cleaned up sections of Franklin Street twice with Chi Omega.
“As for rush, we finished this spring with four initiates: names are Matthew Spivey, David Gillespie, Jesh Bellisimo, and Dylan Webb. They are all freshmen.
“For a housing update, we are in the process of building a new permanent stone grill in the front of our house. This summer we are also repainting the front of the house, refinishing the wooden floors on the first and second stories, painting the walls and floor of the staircase, and making technological updates to the study.”
Tower Award Presentation Coming Sunday
Brothers,
Just a reminder that Brother Ruffin Poole, will be receiving the John Tower award this coming weekend for continued success in his
career, charitable works and service to the Fraternity. The District Grand Master will be presenting the award to Ruffin this
Sunday, January 21st, in a ceremony at the house that starts at 2pm. Hopefully, some of you will be able to join us at the house for the
presentation and some food. UNC plays GA Tech on Saturday night and ESPN gameday will be here that day as well. So come into
town and catch the game and honor Ruffin. Contact me at mtrmailDELETETHISatDELETETHIShotmail.com if you are coming into town and want to get together somewhere (KE house, local bar) to watch the game. Also, for those of you who are interested, Lindon Hayes and I will be mountain biking on the local trails on Saturday and may play some hoops as well.

Poole To Receive Tower Award
It is my privilege to inform you that Ruffin Poole, aka Sugar Boots, has been selected by the Supreme Executive Committee of Kappa Sigma Fraternity to receive the John Tower award for continued success in his career, charitable works and service to the Fraternity. Ruffin joins the likes of Robert Redford, James Taylor and Bob Dole in receiving this award.
The District Grand Master will be presenting the award to Ruffin on Sunday, January 21st, from 2-4 pm. Hopefully, some of you will be able to join us at the house for the presentation and some light food and drinks (drinks only if we get the sanctions lifted by then). UNC plays GA Tech on Saturday night and ESPN gameday will be here that day as well.
It will be a fun weekend to come into town. You should be recovered enough from your gamenight revelry to make it to the awards presentation for some Bloody Marys and kudos for Ruffin by 2pm. Start planning your trip.

Homecoming Saturday
Brothers,
I hope your fall is going well and you are all ready for football season to end and basketball to begin. This letter is a reminder that this Saturday after the game we will have a band and an oyster roast. Game time is 12 o’clock, so we will begin here around 3:30pm. Before the game, soft drinks/mixers will be available as well. Feel free to bring any friends and family. Also, if you need a parking space, though we have limited spots, we are willing to move our cars. Please email me at sddennis_erasethispart_atemail.unc.edu if interested, we will work on a first come first serve basis.
I have mentioned to some of you that if you would like to organize a reunion for brothers of your era, please contact me. We would be glad to help with or host the event. We can also help with addresses and numbers of brothers with whom you have lost touch.
Also, I mentioned in my last letter having an event in Pinehurst where we would rent a luxury train and serve drinks and dinner. The father of a brother in the house owns this train and is willing to donate it to us for the evening. He has done this in the past for political candidates trying to raise money. We would do this on a Friday in the spring or summer, so you could make golf plans for Saturday. However, before we set this up, we need some of you to express interest before we begin writing the next newsletter at the end of this month. Please email me with questions or suggestions.
At chapters this month brothers have suggesting doing more community service projects. We plan to have at least one philanthropy event a month. This Saturday at the house we are asking alumni to bring canned goods that will be donated to a local shelter. Last week before Halloween we carved pumpkins with a sorority for the Ronald McDonald house. We have rented out La Residence for the end of this month, where a couple of bands are playing to raise money for a local charity. One of the bands playing is composed of brothers in the house.
I encourage all of you to come by our house and visit. The chapter is doing well and we have a strong pledge class of fifteen that will be initiated at the end of this week. Thanks again to all of you who donated money following the last newsletter.
Sincerely,
Scott Dennis, Alumni Chair
Chapter Update
Brothers,
I hope your fall is going well and you received the newsletter we mailed a week ago. This is a reminder that after our next home game, October 14th, against South Florida we will have a band and a pig with sides. As usual we will also have mixers. Since the game is at Noon, the band will begin at 3pm and play until 6pm. The pig will be served at 5 o’clock. I hope many of you decide to join us. Also, as a reminder, we will be having a band for homecoming, and there is talk of an oyster roast instead of a pig. This information will be posted here later.
Over the past year our undergraduates have made a conscious effort to improve the structure of the house. Many of the fraternity houses in Chapel Hill seem to have a more home-like appearance; ours has come a long way. The entire house has been repainted, we have added three rugs to the chapter room, and every room on the second floor has a new loft in it. Many of you upon return have seen the bar that was added in 2004 by the new initiates. However, we are in need of new couches, pictures, beer signs (if you can part with them), coffee tables, and side tables. Also, if anyone has an extra ping pong table, we will put it in the basement. If you are willing to donate any such items, please email me at sddennis.takethisout.at.email.unc.edu , and we will make arrangements to pick it up. As a side note, nice furniture will be moved to our basement whenever we have open parties.
Last year a golf tournament was planned that was eventually cancelled due to a limited response. Perhaps our goals were too lofty for such an alumni event when many have not been contacted for such a long period. This year, we are suggesting a new event in Pinehurst for the spring/summer. However, we want to ask you to share your thoughts with us before we pursue it. An undergraduate’s father owns an old, eloquent, party train he is offering us to use for free. He has used this train in the past to raise money for political candidates. Dinner would be
provided on the cars and a bar would be on a connected car. Alumni would have to pay for dinner and drinks, and wives are welcome. We would have this on a Friday night, so you could
engage your own golf plans the following day. Please express your interest over the list-serve, and email me any other suggestions for alumni events.
I want to thank Brother Glen Taylor, ‘92, for coming to speak at our Star and Crescent dinner this fall. The Star and Crescent dinner is an invite-only event we have near the end of every rush where an alumnus comes to speak over a steak dinner. Brother Taylor, Head Coach of Christ Church School in Virginia, did an exceptional job. We finished this rush with sixteen
pledges.
In other news, Marcus Reynolds, ‘92, has just accepted a job as an Assistant Alumni Advisor. Brother Reynolds recently moved back to the area. He frequently comes to chapter and other events, keeping an eye on the undergraduates. As I have picked up from stories with Brother Reynolds and other alumni, apparently, some things have not changed.
We thank you for all of the support you continue to show to Alpha-Mu. We love seeing all of you come by on football saturdays and hearing the stories you share with us.
Thanks for your time,
Scott Dennis
